Frequently Asked Questions

What is Criminal Harassment?

Most commonly known as “Stalking”. No person shall, without lawful authority and knowing that another person is harassed or recklessly as to whether the other person is harassed, engage in conduct that causes that other person reasonably, in all the circumstances, to fear for their safety or the safety of anyone known to them.

Who experiences it?

In Canada, most victims/survivors are stalked by someone they know – an ex, a family member, a former friend. Only 12% of victims are stalked by a stranger. Although anyone can experience stalking, it is a gendered crime. Eight out of 10 victims of stalking are women and 9 out of 10 stalkers are men.
